EDEXCEL Entry Level Certificate
in Skills for Working Life : Land Based

Horticulture

On this course we do a lot of practical work outside, caring for the environment around Petty Pool.

P4230009.JPGWe do a lot of work growing and caring for different types of plants as part of our studies. We have a large greenhouse to work in where we plant seeds, take cuttings and grow plants on. Every summer we open to the public to sell plants, hanging baskets and pots that we have grown. We all have different jobs to do and wear our business uniforms.

We each have a plot of land outside that we are responsible for and can choose what we want to grow. We grow a lot of vegetables which we send over to the kitchen to make delicious soups.

trade show.JPGWe often take part in projects outside of Petty Pool to help the local community. A number of students have volunteered with ‘Knutsford Grow’ a charity that helps elderly residents and people with disabilities maintain their gardens.

We also took part in a project with The Princes Trust and helped produce plants for an award winning show garden at the RHS Flower show at Tatton.

P4230007.JPGAs well as growing plants and vegetables, we also look at how the local environment is used and how we can look after it. At the moment we are developing the woodland walkway.

“Students’ achievements are very good and in practical activities they are excellent.”

The Horticulture department is self funding through its business activities throughout the year.

During the summer season the group runs a Garden Centre which is now, due to its popularity, is open to the public two days a week.  This year students even went to sell the plants they had grown at Cheshire Police Headquarters in Winsford.
Students are invited to apply for the various job roles available and all wear uniforms.
Each year the Garden Centre has increased its profits, all of which go back into the Horticulture department.
This department is also popular with members of the public who support us through volunteering their time and expertise.
