Horticulture

On this course we do a lot of practical work outside, caring for the environment around Petty Pool.

We do a lot of work growing and caring for different types of plants as part of our studies. We have a large greenhouse to work in where we plant seeds, take cuttings and grow plants on. Every summer we open to the public to sell plants, hanging baskets and pots that we have grown. We all have different jobs to do and wear our business uniforms.

We each have a plot of land outside that we are responsible for and can choose what we want to grow. We grow a lot of vegetables which we send over to the kitchen to make delicious soups.

We often take part in projects outside of Petty Pool to help the local community. A number of students have volunteered with ‘Knutsford Grow’ a charity that helps elderly residents and people with disabilities maintain their gardens.

We also took part in a project with The Princes Trust and helped produce plants for an award winning show garden at the RHS Flower show at Tatton.

As well as growing plants and vegetables, we also look at how the local environment is used and how we can look after it. At the moment we are developing the woodland walkway.
