Petty Pool believes that the development of life skills is as vital to our students success as any other of our accredited courses, helping our students to get ‘one step closer’ to living independently. At the beginning of each year all learners undertake a life skills assessment, where they identify skills that they can do on their own, with help or cant do at the moment. These include skills such as drying your own hair, knowing clothes sizes, replacing light bulbs, making beds, using public transport, ordering a take away and much more. Everything that others may take for granted. Students work in small groups in the lodge to develop their domestic skills with the life skills coordinator, whilst others go out into the community. ![]() ![]() |

At the beginning of the year we are assessed to see what life skills we have or need to practice. When we have done this we set ourselves targets for the year. These could be to cook a meal for myself, fill a bath, open a bank account, making a hairdressers appointment and many more, whatever we want to learn.
We work in the lodge with the life skills coordinator to develop our domestic skills. The lodge is just like our homes, with a bathroom, kitchen, bedrooms and a living room that all need keeping clean and tidy.
We also go out into our local community to improve our skills outside of the home, such as posting letters, buying clothes, using public or community transport and looking at activities we can do when we aren’t at college such as sports. We also have outside visitors to teach us about self defence, fire safety and first aid.
