Petty Pool Students Thriving on Supported Internships at Nando’s Warrington

At Nando’s Warrington Junction 9, inclusion and teamwork are at the heart of their success.

At the start of this academic year, the restaurant partnered with Petty Pool to offer supported internships to two of their learners, David and Mark. Supported internships are all about individuals being supported to learn the skills necessary to achieve a paid outcome.  This partnership has blossomed into a transformational journey for both the learners and the Nando’s team.

A New Opportunity

When Store Manager, Alice Heathcote first welcomed David and Mark, she hadn’t experienced the supported intern programme before, and whilst keen to explore, was unsure exactly how it would work in practice. However, within just a week, her perception had completely changed. She shared with Petty Pool how she quickly saw the value of the programme and how aligned it was with Nando’s culture.

David and Mark integrated seamlessly into the front-of-house team, bringing enthusiasm, dedication, and a contagious positivity. They have not only embraced every task with a smile but have also demonstrated a genuine desire to learn and contribute to the workplace. Alice now looks forward to the days they are in work, describing them as “role models to the staff team.”

The Impact on the Nando’s Team

Far from being just passive learners, David and Mark have had a profound effect on the entire Nando’s team. Their presence has encouraged colleagues to work more collaboratively and with greater patience and empathy. Alice notes that they “add a huge amount to the business”.

Their impact extends beyond the team; customers have noticed too. The restaurant has received positive feedback from customers who appreciate the welcoming atmosphere that David and Mark help create.

This experience has even led Alice to rethink her approach to recruitment, recognising the incredible value that young people with learning disabilities can bring to a business.

Before Christmas the  Warrington Junction 9 restaurant had a full team Christmas meeting to present staff with different awards, called the Nandoscars! All staff voted in a poll and both Mark and David proudly were awarded the ‘Who has created lasting happiness’ award, and were runners up in the ‘Best Double Act’ category!

The Role of the Job Coach

One of the key elements of this success has been the guidance of Rachel, the job coach from Petty Pool. Alice has been full of praise for Rachel’s support, describing her as instrumental in making the process smooth and positive for everyone involved. Rachel’s expertise has helped the interns thrive and has empowered the wider Nando’s team with a greater understanding of neurodiverse individuals in the workplace.

Reflecting on the experience, Rachel highlighted how well Nando’s core mission aligns with the goals of supported internships:

Nando’s mission is: “Let’s create lasting happiness and change lives together.”

“What a perfect fit for Petty Pool’s supported interns!” said Rachel.

A Stronger Partnership Moving Forward

As this partnership continues to grow, Petty Pool’s Curriculum Manager, Gemma Limberg, is eager to explore new ways to develop the relationship further. Head of People and Culture at Petty Pool, Joanne Palmerino has been supporting Alice through the Employer Disability Confident Scheme, ensuring that Nando’s are equipped to continue to champion inclusive hiring. They’ve just achieved their Disability Confident Level 1 Accreditation.

Nando’s values of pride, passion, courage, integrity and family align closely with Petty Pool’s mission and Gemma sees great potential for further collaboration, and longevity for years to come with a partnership with Nandos.

A Message to Other Employers

Alice has a clear message for businesses considering a similar opportunity:

“If the opportunity arises, grab it with both hands! I initially thought that we as a team at Nandos would be helping David and Mark. Instead, I’ve realised that David and Mark have had a much greater impact on our team. We’ve benefitted from having them as part of our restaurant, not the other way around.”

Alice has seen firsthand how supported internships not only provide invaluable experience to the interns but also enrich the entire workplace, and Petty Pool are so grateful for Alice’s championing of the supported internship scheme.

“I initially thought that we as a team at Nandos would be helping David and Mark. Instead, I’ve realised that David and Mark have had a much greater impact on our team. We’ve benefitted from having them as part of our restaurant, not the other way around.”
